Hand carved in Indonesia out of teak. Kwan Yin, one of the major deities in Buddhism - a.k.a. the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. The terms "compassion" and "mercy" are not the best interpretation of Kwan Yin's energy; the energy Kwan Yin expresses is akin to what a mother feels for her a child - a fierce energy of love and protection that can not be expressed verbally.
As legend goes, even though Kwan Yin attained enlightenment, just as she was about to enter the heavens, the cries of the world drew her back to help humankind find the right path. She took a vow to help humans, thus Kwan Yin is known as the female Bodisattva.
